ATOMIC PUNKS
CARESS OF STEEL
BAD MEDICINE
At House Of Blues
By Dave Moore
80's tribute night and KNAC pure rock night all wrapped into one at the House Of Blues
this past Sunday. First up was Bad Medicine, a Bon Jovi tribute band that played a few
good songs like "Living on a prayer", "Wanted, Dead or Alive",
"Runaway" and concluded with "Bad Medicine". Some of the other songs
they did were the love ballads which bored the hell out of me and I don't remember the
titles right now. Don't get me wrong, these guys were really good and if you like Bon Jovi
you'll like them too.
Next up was the Rush tribute band Caress Of Steel who promptly ripped through killers
versions of "Spirit Of The Radio", "Tom Sawyer", and
"Limelight". These guys had it down perfectly including looking like Rush and
having the vocals sounding just like Geddy Lee's. "The Trees" and "Fly By
Night" were next and also a devastating version of the instrumental "XYZ".
Going back as far as to Rush's first and second albums were the songs "Find My
Way" and "Vital", both songs being played with great musicianship and again
having excellent vocals. Go see this band as soon as you can and also check out their
original band called AFTERLIFE. Great night for Caress Of Steel this evening, can't wait
to see them again.
The return of the Atomic Punks prooved to be worth the wait as they tore into an intense
version of "Everybody Wants Some" and followed it up with "Panama",
Light Up The Sky" , Dance The Night Away", and "Running With The
Devil". If I didn't know any better I'd swear I was warped back in time to the Van
Halen heydey when Diamond David Lee Roth was the still the frontman. Singer Ralph Saenz
(also the new singer for L.A. Guns) actually looks, sounds and acts more like David Lee
Roth than David Lee Roth does and has his act down to perfection. "Ice Cream
Man", "So This Is Love", "Hot For Teacher" and "Atomic
Punk" were also highlights of the show as well as the guitar playing of guitarist
Bart Walsh, who nailed every lead note for note. In the end they wrapped it up with
"Unchained", "Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love" and "Somebody Get Me A
Doctor", and also showed why they are L.A.'s premeir tribute band.
Overall, all the bands had great musicianship and the resemblance they had to those they
were paying tribute to was as close as you can get to the originators. To have your band
